What Travel Nursing Is Like This Summer

COVID-19 has transformed our daily lives, altering how we work, shop, socialize, and practice personal hygiene. While the "new normal" differs significantly, the appealing aspects of travel nursing remain unchanged.

COVID-19 has changed a lot about the way we live our daily lives. It’s changed the way we work, the way we shop, the way we socialize, and even our personal hygiene practices. Although the “new normal” seems drastically different from how we used to do things, there are still many aspects of travel nursing that remain the same – and many of those aspects are what make working as a travel nurse so appealing.

Working as a travel nurse this summer, things will inevitably be a little different while you’re on the job. But during your free time, there are still countless opportunities to have the time of your life! The ‘new normal’ might even force you to get a bit more creative with your free time, and leave you with a completely unique summer!

Some of the top activities our travel nurses choose to try while on the road include:

  • hiking

  • biking

  • going to the beach or to a lake

  • exploring national parks

  • kayaking

  • fishing

  • horseback riding

  • camping

  • having a picnic.

When looking to make recommendations of activities for our nurses to enjoy during their contracts, we realized that these top activities can quite easily still be done amidst the “new normal.” For those who prefer shopping and dining experiences, outdoor farmers’ markets can become a haven for you to try delicious bites and local products, while patios and vineyards offer sit-down options that are still open-air. Of course, it’s still important to wear a mask, social distance, and wash your hands.

A few other activities that we recommend to our nurses who are out on the road include exploring their neighbourhood (sunset walks can be incredible!), hosting a barbecue for friends who are ‘within your bubble’, golfing, going to a drive-in movie theatre, growing your own herb garden, starting a virtual book club, paddle boarding, or yoga in a park (or any outdoor fitness activity for that matter!).

It’s also a great time to do the things you’ve put off for a while. Do you have a reading list you haven’t gotten through yet? Letters you could write to loved ones? Remote volunteer activities you want to try? A marathon to train for (a 5K will also do!)? Tackling a new skill, such as baking croissants or learning another language, can help boost happiness too, while also expanding your world. For more mellow options, meditation or listening to podcasts and audiobooks can help you de-stress and enjoy some ‘me time.’
