National Nursing Week 2026 - Letter from the Owner

A heartfelt National Nursing Week message from Select Medical Connections founder Melanie Olsen, recognizing the compassion, strength, and impact of nurses across Canada.

May 7, 2026

To the nurses we have the privilege of working with,

National Nursing Week is always a meaningful time for me.

This year’s theme – “The Power of Nurses to Transform Health” – is something I’ve believed in from the very beginning, long before Select Medical Connections ever existed.

Over 27 years ago, I stepped into the world of travel nursing because I saw something that couldn’t be ignored – a growing need for skilled, compassionate professionals across Canada, and a group of people willing to step into that need, no matter how challenging it was.

What I didn’t fully understand at the time was just how much nurses truly carry.

You walk into environments that are unfamiliar. You take on responsibility that most people will never experience. You show up in moments that matter most – often when people are at their most vulnerable. And you do it with a level of consistency, professionalism, and care that is nothing short of remarkable.

Over the years, I’ve come to describe nurses as ‘the angels that walk among us”. Not because the work is easy or idealized, but because of the quiet, powerful impact you have every single day.

The power of nurses isn’t something that needs to be defined:

  • It’s seen in the decisions you make under pressure.

  • It’s felt by the patients and families you support.

  • And it’s reflected in the way you continue to move healthcare forward… often without the recognition you deserve.

At Select Medical Connections, our role has always been simple: We exist to support that power.

Whether that means helping you find the right opportunity, supporting you through transitions, or ensuring you have the resources to do your work with confidence – everything we do is grounded in the understanding that the work starts with you.

National Nursing Week is about recognizing your profession, but I hope you know this… The impact you have is not limited to one week. It’s something that shapes lives, communities, and healthcare systems every single day.

Thank you for the work you do. Thank you for the responsibility you carry. And thank you for allowing us to be a small part of your journey.

With respect and appreciation,

Melanie Olsen
