The Select Medical Connections Story
An Agency Built Around Nurses, Not Just Placements
Our History
Select Medical Connections was founded over 27 years ago with a simple observation: Healthcare systems across Canada were facing growing pressure — and nurses were stepping in to meet that need, often in unfamiliar environments, far from home.
What started as a response to that need quickly became something more. From the beginning, we saw travel nursing not just as a staffing option, but as an opportunity — for nurses to grow, to explore, and to make a meaningful impact wherever they were needed most.
Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside tens of thousands of healthcare professionals across Canada, supporting them through new placements, new communities, and new stages of their careers.
What hasn’t changed is the belief that started it all: When you support nurses properly, everything else follows.
Our Mission
At Select Medical Connections, our mission is rooted in a simple idea: To help nurses discover meaningful travel opportunities where personal growth, professional impact, and choice go hand in hand.
We believe that nurses deserve more than just contracts. They deserve:
The freedom to choose where and how they work
The support to navigate each step of their journey
The confidence that someone has their back
That’s why we focus on creating opportunities that allow nurses to build careers — and lives — they feel proud of.
We don’t just connect people to placements. We help create experiences that are professionally rewarding, personally fulfilling, and genuinely impactful.
Our Founder
Select Medical Connections was founded by Melanie Olsen, whose perspective on healthcare has been shaped by decades of working alongside nurses across Canada.
Melanie often jokes that she has three children — her son, her daughter, and her business. It’s a light way of saying something that’s very real.
For more than 27 years, she has built Select Medical Connections with the same level of care, attention, and responsibility — growing it from the ground up while staying closely connected to the people it was created to serve.
From the beginning, Melanie saw both the opportunity and the challenge within the Canadian healthcare system. The system needed organised, professional and focussed support. Nurses were stepping in to meet that need — often in unfamiliar environments, under pressure, and with very little support or margin for error.
What stood out wasn’t just the work itself, but the level of commitment required to do it well.
That understanding shaped how Select Medical Connections was built. Not as a traditional staffing agency, but as a responsible partner — one that prioritizes relationships, supports nurses through each stage of their journey, and recognizes that behind every placement is a person carrying real responsibility.
Nearly three decades later, that same approach continues to guide the company forward.
